"I no longer recognize marriage"

Tom Ackerman
I no longer recognize marriage. It’s a new thing I’m trying.

Turns out it’s fun.

Yesterday I called a woman’s spouse her boyfriend.

She says, correcting me, “He’s my husband,”
“Oh,” I say, “I no longer recognize marriage.”

  1. How true. I no longer recognize my own face.

  2. I'm going to try this out on MathMan. I'm sure he'll be amused!

    Wish me luck.

Me: Honey, I'm no longer recognizing our marriage.

Him: Yeah, I saw that. You know, there were times when I truly believed that about you.

Zing. He got me, but good.

  3. This made me laugh and laugh. Not sure why it hit me so hard. Maybe it's because I spent the entire day painting a piece about an elopement, and then I read this. I think if marriage has to have such a limited definition (CA Prop 8), maybe I don't recognize it either. Mind you, I certainly still recognize mine - I'd recognize my marriage anywhere. I think I recognized it in those two beautiful brides that I painted from, actually... Never mind - I DO recognize marriage! It's really plain to me when I see it. I just can't see it in every married couple I know, and I certainly see it in some couples who can't get married.
