Maverick?

McCain has been called a maverick so long we forgot what it really means. In McCain’s case it means loose-cannon.

I don't understand why the press has looked on McCain as a maverick war hero. This deification of McCain from, damaged by his long imprisonment and torture, to maverick, wise old man, was mostly perpetuated by the fact that nobody thought he would ever be in a position to do much damage to the country. Well, things have changed. Mostly due to the dismal lineup of thugs, kooks, and bad actors he was running against. At least he isn’t that Nazi thug Rudy, we all sighed when it was over. At least it wasn’t plastic-man, Romney, the ethical contortionist and all round aging Ken doll. At least he wasn’t Huckabee, mister evangelical right wing nut job, charming and jovial as he was.

But now we have to honestly take a look at who John McCain really is. What has he done with his long, lack-luster career in the Senate. He says he is not a friend of the lobbyist. Take a closer look at that claim. Who runs his campaign and what is his real voting history vis a vis “special interests?” What really happens to any soldier captured and tortured, held in solitary confinement so long he cannot control his temper ever again. Can you honestly tell me this man doesn’t have PTSD? How could he not? And he hasn’t weighed in on the G I Bill?!!!

What’s up with this angry old warrior the press has dubbed a maverick?

John McCain Is No Patriot

A serious fraud is being perpetuated on the American Public; the fraud of John McCain. The Senator casts himself in the light of a patriot, someone who is ‘duty-bound’ and ‘honor-bound’ to serve America. But a close look at McCain’s life reveals quite the opposite.

John McCain is a self-serving glory hound who only cares about obtaining honor for his own satisfaction. His Grandfather was a Navy Admiral as was his Father. No doubt John felt a strong need to distinguish himself from the shadows cast by their long careers. John needed glory and honor early and often to help prove himself to his family.

Reality is John was a problem child with a horrible temper. In school they called him ‘McNasty’. He never would have made it into the Naval Academy or graduated without the help of his father.

Yes, McCain served in the Vietnam War which is more than we can say about George W Bush. Yes he was a POW and by most accounts was tortured. But at the same time he collaborated with the North Vietnamese in hopes of obtaining better treatment. He gave up military secrets and made pro-North Vietnamese broadcasts. When McCain was released from the Hanoi Hilton he would have been court-martialed for violating the UCMJ if his father had not intervened.

McCain returned to military service after rehabilitation. His hope was to become an Admiral. By 1979 his military career had stalled. He wasn't going to get promoted any further thus he turned his ambition to politics.

McCain cheated on his first wife with his current wife Cindy, who happens to be a wealthy heiress. With her money and connections McCain had enough backing to enter the political arena. She introduced him to Charles Keating. McCain’s mind turned to money and how to use his political office to benefit his own ambition.

In 1993 McCain blocked the release of classified documents relating to MIA/POW’s of the Vietnam War. Once again McCain’s concern was for himself. He feared that records of his own POW experience, including documents relating to his collaboration with the North, would jeopardize his political career.

By 1999 McCain had survived the S&L scandal as a member of the Keating Five and was able to tamp down protests by fellow Vietnam Vets and POW’s over his blocking of classified documents. McCain recast himself as ‘The Maverick’ and the ‘Straight Talker’ who was going to take Republicans and Democrats to task. He wasn’t going to bow down to special interests or the rabid evangelical right. He claimed to be more Independent than Republican and gained broad public appeal as well as love from an adoring media.

In 2000 Bush and Rove tore McCain to shreds effectively stopping the straight talk express in its tracks. Disheveled and defeated McCain retreated. He did what no one thought he would ever do; he kissed Bush’s ring. He then went on to apologize to the evangelical right-wing Christian community. He gave speeches at Pat Robertson’s university hoping to make amends.

Once again McCain put his own political career before his integrity. McCain put himself before country. That, my friends, is not a patriot but a traitor.

Perhaps the worst transgressions committed by McCain would come during the Bush Presidency. McCain continued to support Bush lock-step on nearly ever issue. After fighting in the Vietnam War and seeing what a tragedy it was for the country, many expected McCain to come out against the invasion of Iraq. He had the experience, wisdom, and knowledge to know better. He had the political experience and public exposure to make a difference.

Instead McCain sided with Bush. McCain became a cheerleader for the occupation of Iraq. McCain supported torture. McCain went on to support nearly everything Bush/Cheney said and did.

If McCain were a true patriot he would have put America before his own political ambition. He didn’t. Instead he sold America out for his own chance to become President. McCain wants to be President not to ‘serve’ America. McCain wants to be President so he can finally climb out of the long shadows cast by his father and grandfather. McCain is still trying to prove himself. McCain still wants to obtain honor from war not for America but for himself to prove to his ancestors that he is worthy.

McCain is still that ill-tempered nasty little boy trying to obtain the approval and affection of his father. Except now he substitutes the American People for his father. As usual when he doesn’t get the approval he so desires he lashes out and flashes that McNasty temper.

McCain is no patriot. The pattern of his life is clear; McCain does what McCain thinks will help McCain. That’s not patriotic, that’s egomaniacal.

Safety Valve: Letters from readers

No hero

After reading the letter from William Miller (The Safety Valve, March 26), I feel compelled to make a few observations.

As a Vietnam veteran, I have taken some time to acquaint myself with the history of John McCain. My interest peaked during the Senate POW/MIA hearings during the early 1990s. The senator's outrageous behavior during those hearings convinced me that he was a despicable and dishonest character.

In the senator's book, "Faith of My Fathers," McCain admitted that he had dishonored himself by giving military information to his interrogators. He was NOT, however, at all honest about what he actually did. John McCain was NOT tortured before he expressed a willingness to trade military information for medical treatment. At that point, his actions were motivated solely by self-interest. And while I can sympathize with McCain's situation at the time, his actions were clearly a violation of the Military Code of Conduct, actions which can hardly be considered "heroic."

My main beef with the senator is his willingness to be portrayed as a heroic figure. He is not.

Nowhere will you read anything about his collaboration with the North Vietnamese. And, make no mistake about it, more than 30 anti-war, anti-American propaganda broadcasts certainly qualify as collaboration. Had McCain not been the son and grandson of Navy admirals, it is likely he would have faced a court-martial upon his release.

Readers should consider that McCain knew, full well, that he was being treated more leniently than the other prisoners in his compound. He states so, directly, in his book.

Do not mistake my position. I certainly applaud John McCain for surviving his ordeal. As a Marine who served two tours in Vietnam, I often wondered how I would handle captivity. Fortunately, I never had to find out. I have no illusions concerning my ability to withstand prolonged, intense physical pain. However, I would never parade myself as a hero nor would I allow others to make that claim on my behalf.

Dear Anything but Average, thank you for doing all the heavy lifting for me on this one. I have always suspected the myth of McCain's heroism, always viewed him with the jaundiced eye of the sceptic, always wondered about his bizarre trophy wife, his conversion after his tangle with Rovian politics. Now I know. So should the rest of us. Hope word gets out to the mainstream press.

Thanks and You're entirely welcome!
McCain is more dangerous than Bush and I am afraid once again when we speak the truth we will be called unpatriotic and anti American while nothing can be further from the truth.
I am sick of having those that speak the truth labeled conspiracy theorists while the real conspiracy the destruction of our America continues under oour noses.

You know the more McGoon distances himself from Bush the more like him he gets. with McCain the policy is Lie long and loud enough and you will believe it is the truth! McCain is gullible and easily manipulated. If you don't like his stand he will like Bush say something you want to hear but do the same damn thing.
I was listening to Obama after I posted about McCain on Cuba and in the past McCain said the same damn thing. I just can't stand it! We are in serious trouble and McCain wants to continue us in the same direction.
I really want to watch a one on one between McCain and Obama because as long as Obama doesn't let him get away with his ignorant rhetoric and throws it in his face he is going to make him look like the idiot he is and hang him out to dry!

DivaJood said...

And this is why I love you, Jim. You do good research. McCain has actually shown how he speaks out of both sides of his mouth on countless occaisions during the campaign. I never much liked him, but gave him props as a POW. Did not know that he'd collaborated with North Viet Nam.

That simply boggles my mind, because the MSM has obviously ignored that bit of information.

well i for one am not voting for McCain...... i simply refuse. he is truly a strange squirrel. he challenged the religious rightists at one point and even challenged Dubya on his conduct of the war...... but now he is just honking on Dubya's bobo and it is disgusting.

Thanks we are like minded! I didn't know he collaborated until I researched him. There is a lot of negatives documented on him and I am amazed it has never been brought out but not really because people would be afraid to be branded a traitor or something for talking bad about a war hero.
I am afraid at this point that President McCain is a foregone conclusion and as the next republican false God whoever speaks the truth about him will be labeled anti America, unpatriotic, etc.
It isn't funny but the Republicans can lie and say and do whatever they want but don't let a Democrat try it Our people have to start holding them accountable and now. Tit for Tat it works!

You'll like this! i forgot to say what i wanted until I just saw your comment again. I use to say this in regard to Bush but it applies to McCain: Bush has competition for talking out of both sides of his mouth while his foot is in it smart ass smirk on his face the whole time!

You guys are all missing the point here: he's a maverick in all his mavericky maverickness. You don't get that sobriquet by NOT being a maverick. Duh.

Talking out of both sides of your mouth? Mavericky.

Hanging out with apocalyptic lunatics? Top Gunny with a side o' Val Kilmer.

Whore to moneyed interests? Rebel With A Cause.

Only one kind of man could be this much an out-of-touch, ignorant curmudgeon in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary of his bizarre, for-sale worldview: a maverick.

When you bomb Iran, John, many will be behind you 100%. The much greater amount that is the rest of us will be in our basements drinking heavily.

An outstanding patriot. Grrrrreat McShame information. Let me add he's also anti-choice and is supported by that freaky Fat Toad Haggis (or Hagee if you prefer).

Need more info about the Fat Toad? There's the link.

Wait until you see the article at Huffpo today entitled: McCain Backer Hagee Said Hitler Was Fulfilling God's Will.

John Hagee, the controversial evangelical leader and endorser of Sen. John McCain, argued in a late 1990s sermon that the Nazis had operated on God's behalf to chase the Jews from Europe and shepherd them to Palestine. According to the Reverend, Adolph Hitler was a "hunter," sent by God, who was tasked with expediting God's will of having the Jews re-establish a state of Israel.

Let's compare the feigned media outrage about Rev. Wright's remarks and compare them to little or no press for Fat Toad Hagee and his protegee McShame, McBlame, a GOP that's always the McSame.

Thanks for the history lesson, a.a. patriot. Even notice how Utah's brilliant writing always fosters great intellectual exchange. Hello, tomcat and DivaJood, randall, and ghost.

It's going to be a long election.

I think, Utah, you have to distinguish between the McCain of 1999-2002 and what has transpired since then. In the former years, he truly was a maverick, maverick to the point that he was constantly referred to as "Bush nemesis, John McCain." In fact, he came within a whisper of changing his party affiliation in '01. Obviously, a lot has changed since then and he now appears to be nothing but your average political opportunist. A very sad degeneration.

I would not, however, put too much stock in the information coming out of Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain. From what I gather, it's basically some lunatic working out of his own basement. I mean, look, if we're going to complain when a Democrat gets "swift-boated", don't we have to be at least somewhat fair-minded when it happens a Republican. Let's leave the really dirty tactics to Karl Rove.

The old McCain at least had some redeeming qualities and viewpoints but he has completely sold out to the right wing of his party, drinking the Kool-Aid that tax cuts are good, and so on. He was still the least of the really bad evils (Romney, Guiliani, Huckabee) but nevertheless would be a disastrous president.

Did you all see how ridiculous he looked and how out of his element he was on SNL last week?

D.K. Raed said...

Leaving aside his distant past, or even his more recent past, when I look at McCain today, I see a befuddled but still highly dangerous man. I'm afraid his befuddledliness reminds me far too much of how my mom acted just before her alzheimer's became obvious. The man is on auto-pilot.

Lately he is squinting down hard on one eye, the eye on the cancer side, which if you look closely, has a blown pupil (mini-stroke?). Then there is that lump no one talks about. The one taking over his jawline on the cancer side of his face. It should be removed, except that would also remove jaw muscle which would interfere with his speaking ability making him unelectable (sad, but true, in this age of relentless media).

Repubs don't seem concerned about all that, but when Bill Bradley revealed he had a heart murmur, he was practically flung off the stage, even though physicians kept pointing out it was a minor defect. So I guess I'm worried not only about all the damage McC would do as president, but also that he has some serious health issues that might make him even more dangerous.

ps, sorry I am scarce, UTAH. I am in the midst of a houseguest ordeal. I hope to be back up to normal this weekend. As normal as ever, I suppose.

Every time I see McCain he looks older and more peevish. I'm hoping his love affair with the MSM ends once the Hillary-Obama circus is over and the press needs fresh blood.

The truth about McCain's behavior as a POW has been kicking around for years, but most people prefer the myth so it hasn't gotten much traction.

What really disgusts me about "The Maverick" is that for years now he has been sucking off the religious Reich.

While in the Navy he totaled 5 airplanes and if he hadn't been the son of an Admiral, he would have had his wings pulled.

RG, no, no, McCain is not a Maverick. My friend Mike is a Maverick, and I have earned Maverick Status for Life. McCain is just a doddering old fool. Mavericks do things like taking pizza via helicopter to a person on a mountain.

Randal Graves said...

But McCain did just that yesterday! Except I think it was Burger King. And he climbed the mountain, didn't use no sissy helicopter. Or even a rope.

Will is certainly right in that this version isn't the old one, which makes you wonder what his agenda is. The dude must really want to be president because he's allying with anyone who'll give him the time of day.

McCain has certainly been getting a free pass from the Media as the Democrats grind each other to a pulp, but we can hope that once things quiet down on the Democratic side, more attention will be paid to Johnny-boy.
