So This Is Why Christmas Makes Me Blue

Great little piece about the Christmas blues from Salon today.

Well, I am blue because my son is now five states away and all by his lonesome too.

I hate the holidays..always have.

It's not that I'm lonely around the holidays, I just don't buy into all that fake holiday cheer. people should care about each other 365 days of the year, not just around Xmas. it just all seems so disingenuous to me.

I spent plenty of holidays alone. my mother would kick my father out on Xmas just like on any other day, so it was never a special. I learned at a young age to create my own happiness, just as we create our own suffering.

and here's a note to all of you with families and kids: don't forget that your friends WITHOUT FAMILIES AND KIDS might like a Merry HoHo from you. so take time out from your busy schedule of buying cheap plastic shit from Walmart to give those of us who are child-free and without families a holler.

hmmmm....seems like a good post to do on AHC.

For Christians, shouldn't everyday be Christmas?

Good point Linda, and I too think you should write about it.

Good info, although I keep thinking there is a difference between lonliness and being alone...very different states of being... And, yes, to Dusty and Linda-Sama, wise women.... I imagine a day when the kids are gone, and I have no one to "deal" with... I wouldn't lift one finger to shop or decorate for this holiday or any other.... What BS...

You are right, US! Every day would be Christmas, if we all truly followed his teachings!!!

I am including a neighbor lady (also a widow), who can't travel to her daughter's this year because of the weather. I called her a little while ago and after she told me she would be alone, I said "oh hell no" and told her what we would be doing. She is ecstatic. She says she feels bad (because we have a gift exchange), and I said that would never be a problem, because we have been doing it for years - she's a newbie! Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and before you know it...it will all be over.

Oh thank god, it will all be over soon and we can get the the only celebrations that matter to me--My one year glogaversary, and the inauguration of President Obama.

Ditto, Dusty, Giggles, and Linda-Sama. My husband and I agreed to exchange gifts no longer. Being out shopping takes away from being together.

Disingenuous—that sums up the "spirit" of the holidays for me, Linda-Sama. We are reduced to celebrating the holidays with cheap plastic shit from Walmart.

After reading everyone's comments, I feel like I'm among very wise people. That makes me happy.
