So far today, I'm okay, but I imagine this will hit me later in the day. I may be taking a long nap this afternoon.

This morning I've been washing windows. But I can feel grief gathering strength around my heart. I know it's one rejection, but it hurts.

They did however apparently liked my pitch, since they read my excerpt--the first three chapters. But that means I need to do some serious work on those first three chapters.

Ah, nuts! Feel the pain, live with it for a shot bit, then get back to work, right?

Life As I Know It Now said...

lots and lots of great writers were rejected time and time again so this is no reflection on you or your talent.

Laura said...

So sorry Utah. :(
I'm thinking of you today.

I echo Liberality's comment that the rejection is no reflection on you or your talent - absolutely not!

Send it right back out to another publisher, as soon as you're up from that nap.

I have to stay awake until 1:00 because the owner of the roofing company that put my roof on the little house. Late last fall, after first snow, I noticed a small leak around the big porthole skylight. It slowly ran down the inside of the west pyramid wall of the cieling. Which was painted flat white just before the shingles were done. It has taken them from late fall to early spring. I think I can work the righteous indignation I already feel in demanding that they repaint. It requires scaffolding. I don't have scaffolding. It means taping and covering everything. I'm not a happy, satisfied customer. Not yet, anyway.

So sorry to hear that. But don't give up!

Philistines!

Stay strong, my friend.

Linda-Sama said...

so sorry, sistah!

Remember that Amazon appeals to the masses, and you're not one of the masses, you're special!

hey, I got word the other day that none of my India travel stories (I submitted 5) got picked in a travel writing contest, so fuck 'em both!

self-publishing? have you ever heard of Book Splurge or Lulu? A Brit yogini writer is going to self-publish her book in the US and suggested those names to me.

wishing you a peaceful heart!

Comrade Kevin said...

I'm sorry to hear this.

Do you have access to other publishing options?

Utah Savage said...

Not yet, Kevin. I'm taking today off. I've washed some windows, I plan to do a little yard work. Then I'm going to re-edit the first three chapters and send it out again. I'm going to edit on the blog and ask for help. It's worked for stories (which I have yet to submit anywhere). I think it will work for chapters as well.

sorry Utah....

Asswipes. Don't give up though, I'm sure there will be a publisher more than willing to accept your writings. :)

You are better than the ninnies at Amazon.

Take a deep breath. Step through the disappointment. And remember how talented you are.

Now go kiss somebody Irish and tip back a brewsky. (p.s. everybody is Irish today)

MRMacrum said...

That's too bad Utah. Really. You stick with it though. The novel is worth the effort.

Fran said...

Fuck them.

Opportunities will come - your work is too good for it to be otherwise.

Utah Savage said...

Fran, MRMacrum thanks for the kind words. Fran, I love it when you swear.

Steve said...

others have said it but i too will chime in
fuck the corporate behemoth Amazon.
hang in there there are avenues awaiting you and your book

Commander Zaius said...

SCREW THEM!!! Linda-Sama said it best about Amazon appealing to the masses.

Utah Savage said...

Thanks guys. I worked hard enough today doing strictly physical work. I'm mow sufficiently exhausted to fall asleep. I'm usually up till two but not tonight.

The Crow said...

Sweet dreams, SuperScribe!

Sometimes a writing solution comes to me in a dream state...maybe it will for you, too.

I think that sucks! These contests are a lottery, Utah. But all that work you did getting it together shouldn't go to waste.
You've got your synopsis; you're ready to query agents. Ask around: it's awfully tough if you don't know someone who knows someone.
And you know, if I knew someone, you'd be the first I'd recommend. My husband recommends agentquery.com

LeAnn said...

Your story is good as it stands. Did they give you any feedback as to why they chose not to publish it?
I think you should submit it elsewhere.

Vigilante said...

Condolences, Utah.

Utah Savage said...

You are all so kind and generous.

La Belette Rouge said...

Damn them. I am buying all my books at Borders. They are clearly dumb bunnies. Please go and visit my post:http://labeletterouge.blogspot.com/2009/02/with-apology-to-walt-
whitman-and-thanks.html
This is what got me through my rejection. The best advice I can give you is the advice that Carolyn See gave me, go and write them a very kind thank you letter for rejecting you on your very best stationary and then immediately mail it. It really does help it.

Fuck them AND the horse they rode in on..... Obviously they can't see good talent and story when they read it!!

Kentucky Rain said...

Many famous authors, including big guns like Stephen King, had dozens and dozens of rejection slips in their pockets before one publisher finally took a chance Utah. Never give up.

Randal Graves said...

What liberality said. Getting published is no account of good taste. Look at all the bookstores flush with tripe.

Dr. Zaius said...

My condolences on your recent disappointment. Don't be discouraged! Remember this story:

John Kennedy Toole was a high school English teacher in the 50s who wrote a novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. The novel was rejected over and over by all the major publishing houses to which he sent it, and he finally committed suicide. His mother, however, managed to have a publisher read the draft, and eventually the novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. The moral of the story is: Don't make your Mom do all the work!

It's a great book.

Utah Savage said...

Dr Z, you made me laugh today. A Pulitzer for you. I read A Confederacy of Dunces and hated it. Obviously I know nothing.

Dr. Zaius said...

Well, at least his mom liked it! ;o)
