Can the Funeral End Now?

I'm going into a little seclusion, staying in, reading Dorothy Parker, hoping the long deification of Tim Russert will finally end soon, so we can get on with the business of electing a President to clean up the mess left by the eight years of Republican rule. Notice I didn't say governance?

Tim must have been a swell guy, but honestly I can't ever remember anything lasting this long in the way of State Funerals. So goodbye Tim. Now it's time to move off the stage, and let the living get on with living.

It's getting hot here. Swamp cooler weather. (This is the kind of thing I need a man for). I can appreciate a man's many talents, like writing poetry and such, but if he can't hook up the swamp cooler and hang the hammock, well... Not so much. My one big love could play any musical instrument, well even, could compose and write songs, could, in fact, do anything, and do it well, and was smart, too, but... I need to live alone. Short visits are fine, so long as my guest is willing to sleep in the hammock alone, or get a hotel room. And in the hottest of weather, it's almost always cool in the deep shade of the gazebo. Then, late in the evening, the breeze that blows down Emigration Canyon, brings the scent of honeysuckle into the house through open windows.

Wait. Are we supposed to move forward? I can't believe it! Yikes.

For fuck's sake, I turned on the end of tweety and there's Bruce Springsteen singing at the funeral.

This is fucking ridiculous. D.C. and it's lackey media have really forgotten that our elected officials are there to act as public servants not the ruling class.

not Bruce Springsteen! is nothing sacred around here?

I'm going to cut this act right out of my hair. God, I'm sick of waiting for this show to get on the road.

When I get really bored I do drastic things to my hair, and I getting out the tools.

Lib, so glad to see you here. Thanks for the kind words on The End Of Life As We Know It.

Martini anyone?

I was a big fan of Tim Russert but I admit that this is getting a little tiresome.

Russert had a lot of friends and colleagues at MSNBC. I didn't find their coverage offensive. As for the "lackey media" (dcup), you couldn't possibly be referring to Keith (I'm in the tank for Obama) Olbermann, could you?

Well, Will, since you asked, I find the media establishment, including Keith, to be a bit too cozy a club. But at least Keith asks questions and covers topics that others won't.

And, last time I checked, MSNBC was supposed to be a news organization, not a private club of friends and that's why the coverage seems a little over the top for some of us.

one of the benefits of no television reception, I imagine. I get my news from the internets, when in the mood.

Springsteen? I respect him as a person. Sorry, liberality. His music is too gritty East Coast for me, no offense meant. I just can't relate.

Well, dcup, what can we expect? Yes, I love Olberman, but MSNBC is owned by GE, which is a military contractor. Pretty much makes NBC a private club. But how can I give up Law & Order?

How do I applaud in cyberspace, Utah. Enjoy reading your kindred writer. I'm so thrilled you got her book. I can't wait to hear what you think about Big Blonde.

COMMENT

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Roumania.

Wiil, I think you're taking on the wrong woman here. I'm in the tank for Olbermann. Sorry everyone. I'm in the tank for Olbermann. Do we have that clear? Without Olbermann, it's PBS, CSpan and The BBC. Since deregulation all media is owned by Murdick or GE. That is a typo, but I think I'll leave it. Will--I don't have to be fair and balanced here. I do not have to pretend objectivity.

Will "take no prisoners" Hart said...

Being in the tank for a politician is the worst accusation you can make against a journalist. Olbermann, speaking of, has gotten so far beyond the pale in this regard that I'm almost embarrased for the guy. I gather you had no problem with HIS coverage of the Russert funeral. Hmm, Obama went to Russert's funeral (along with McCain), too, huh? What could HE (this prototype of the new breed of politician) have been thinking?

Will "take no prisoners" Hart said...

It's gotten to the point where Olbermann apparently doesn't feel the need to "pretend" objectivity, either. Yeah, G.E. owns MSNBC. But if implying that that network is a right-wing outfit, wow, then we're in a totally different galaxy. As for the "questions/topics" (dcup) that Olbermann "covers", funny, isn't it, how they're always ones that help Obama? I mean, it's gotten to the point where he's become even worse than O'Reilly, for Christ!

Utah Savage said...

Will, will? You' are forgetting where you are. I want my one liberal new media man to be LIBERAL, and since Obama is a democrat, I hope to god Olbermann is a bit biased toward Obama. We want to take back the country. I DO NOT CLAIM TO BE FAIR OR BALANCED. You are not at Dcups place, she is at my place speaking her mind in an atmosphere where her liberal opinions are pretty much in line with mine, so she can rant all she wants. I don't need to defend her since she can do it quite well, but don't come in my back yard and start yelling about Olbermann. I have the hots for the man, so get over it. For fuck sake, give the fair and balanced thing a rest. If we had a left wing media anywhere I might not love Keith quite so much, but, sadly tis not to be it seems.

Tim Russert was deep in the tank to Hillary. During the February 26 Democratic primary debate, Russert repeatedly questioned Sen. Barack Obama about his endorsement by Louis Farrakhan without noting that the campaign was quoted criticizing Farrakhan in the very article Russert cited to note the minister's support, that Obama himself said in a speech the day before the debate that he is a "consistent denunciator of Louis Farrakhan," or that Obama denounced Farrakhan's comments in his response to Russert's initial question on the subject. Russert was either working for Clinton or McCain; he certainly wasn't working for 'fair and balanced'.

I'm with Beach. It's great to see the best and the brightest speak of Tim (or anything/anyone else they genuinely care about. But enough is enough. Let's move on.

oh noooo, not a swamp cooler! I live in the desert because I HATE humidity. The drier it is, the better I like it. Let my nostrils bleed as I breathe in the dry heat. If I wanted heat AND humidity, I'd move to Florida (cept I'm afraid of gators & bigass waterbugs & hurricanes). Sayonara, Tim, is all I've got to say after today!

Will "take no prisoners" Hart said...

I didn't know he was a "liberal new media man". I thought he was a journalist. I mean, that's what he claims to be, anyway. Russert in the tank for Hillary? I kinda doubt that SHE thought that - you know, after he punk'd her with that driver's liscences for illegal aliens question in one of those debates.

I feel sorry for Springsteen. I think all the coverage about how "Tim Adored Springsteen" probably made him feel obligated. I really think he got sucked into it by his "managers." Because he's definitely NOT one to tow the line of the Main Stream on ANY issue. He has a long history of calling things as he sees them. I remember he even stood up against the NYC police after the Amadou Diallo case. And those guys had always been seriously hardcore Bruce fans. Problem with many Bruce fans is that they only know him from his main commercial albums, Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A. Those albums made him a superstar and put lots of $$ in his bank accounts, but to hear the real heart of Springsteen you have to go back to the beginning, with Greetings from Asbury Park and his other early work such as Wild and the Innocent and the E-Street Shuffle. And then you have to fast-forward to Darkness on the Edge of Town and then Nebraska and The Rising and Tunnel of Love. There you will find the real Springsteen.

I loved it when Ford wanted to use one of his songs in their advertising campaigns and he refused. The day Springsteen sells his any of his songs for commercial purposes, I'm outta here. But I don't think he will.

(As you may or may not be able to tell, I grew up at the Jersey Shore and lived in Asbury Park and Belmar when Springsteen was coming up with his band Steel Mill, and then to the height of the Springsteen days ... so my heart is always there and I clearly have strong opinions. If they offend anyone, I'm sorry.)

Vigilante said...

As I slept on it, I felt I was over-the-top excessive on my last comment. Russert was a near-perfect journalist. But he was no Edward R. Murrow. Farrakhan was a huge reach out of the realm of relevance.

And, I'm glad Stella said what she said about Springsteen. Musically, I don't get him either.

Vig always glad to see you show up. It's when I know we've really got a conversation going. I know that sounds kind of sexist to all the smart interesting women here, but Vig, you feel at home among these smart women. Must be living with such a mart, strong woman in you own house.

agree w/Anita, but don't forget "The Ghost of Tom Joad" album. Bruce lived & wrote that one in & about many of the border areas I've lived. Yet when he came to San Diego to perform it, he was greeted by deafening silence. His long time fans didn't like this acoustical phase. So he took the concert tour international & scored big in Japan. Why they would understand american grapes of wrath better than us I don't know. So he does what he wants & you either like him or not, but he will still do what he wants. Obama has been using "The Rising" a lot for music before & after his rallies.

Life As I Know It Now said...

I agree with Anita. that's the Bruce Springsteen I know and love. I like his folk type music best.

bruce springsteen makes me long for smothering. a quick death by smothering. preferably with my ears covered too.

Springsteen wrote one good song, but I can't remember what it's call. Something about a little girl that he was gonna come and git. Maybe it was someone else. That's how much I give a shit about Springsteen.

Divea, babe. A swamp cooler is only usable in very dry, hot climates. It incorporates the use of cold water and a big barrel fan.

DK you are one tough woman to love that desert heat. I go to Santa Barbara or any moist climate and look ten years younger, my hair curls nicely, I feel so good, until my allergy to mold kicks in. I return to SLC and my skin drys out, hair gets straight and straw like. Swamp cooler is almost as good as a trip to the cool tropics for me. I can cool off my cottage in ten minutes twenty degrees. Then I turn it off.

I too feel the coverage of Tim Russert's passing was a bit much. He apparently was a really great guy and all (I didn't watch him that much except when he hosted the debates) but come on, he wasn't a head of state or a pope or something.

And I've always felt Springsteen was a bit overrated...he had a few songs I've liked but I was never that into him. And I'm from New Jersey!
